This powerful flashlight offers high-end features found in more expensive models. At just 5.35 inches with a 1-inch body diameter, the PD36R is an instant hit. The Fenix PD36R is the perfect tactical flashlight for any outdoor application.

The Fenix PD36R tactical flashlight is powered by a high-capacity rechargeable Li-ion battery and packs a punch because of its bright beam and high lumen output. The light is impact-resistant and water-resistant, so you can use it in extreme weather without worrying about damage.

The PD36R has five brightness modes, including a strobe mode. The lowest mode is a reasonable 30 lumens with a 115-hour runtime. Each mode increases the brightness level until the torch reaches 1600 lumens (with an impressive runtime of around three hours).

Below is a detailed review of the Fenix PD36R rechargeable tactical flashlight.

Handling of the PD36R Flashlight

The Fenix PD36R flashlight is powered by a single 217000 li-ion rechargeable battery that can achieve high runtimes. That also means that the body diameter is slightly wider than the ordinary 18650 battery-type flashlights. The two-way pocket clip allows you to clip the light to a pocket or bag strap, ensuring a hands-free experience. This type of pocket is normally found on a high-end tactical flashlight like the PD36R. If you want to attach it to your belt, the PD36R also features an excellent holster. The pocket clip ensures proper grip and prevents it from slipping out of position. Flipping on the light entails pressing the rubber-coated button on the tail side. Changing modes is accomplished with a gentle press of the copper-covered button on its side.

Fenix PD36R Build Quality

How a tactical flashlight is built is crucial, particularly if you want to use it for security or self-defense. Everything about The Fenix PD36R exudes quality. The torch is made from high-strength anodized aluminum while its case is hard-anodized in an impact-resistant black finish. The torch feels great in the palm of your hand and is the right size for transporting in a backpack or attaching to your belt. It also fits perfectly well in the pocket. Its case has been designed to avoid rolling when set down on a flat surface. The PD36R has the highest rating of IPX8, which means it is water-resistant and dustproof. It can tolerate being submerged in water over two meters deep. You can put it through water several times with no damage. The Fenix PD36R has two significant parts, the body, and the head. This light also comes with a pocket clip, a lanyard, and a spare O-ring for the battery compartment. These minor but exciting details make this light feel like a high-end device—the threading on the battery compartment is smooth and has an excellent feeling compared to the rougher threads on most other flashlights in its price range. Plus, a knurled texture adds to the grip and helps keep it secure in wet conditions.

Fenix PD36R 1600 Lumen Output

Lumens measures total light output, so if you are looking for a brighter torch, go for one that has a high lumen capacity. The advantage of tactical flashlights, like the new PD36R, is that they have different brightness settings. One of the best features of the Fenix PD36R tactical light is its 1600 lumen output. If you don’t know how bright 1600 lumens are, it is advisable to compare lights in terms of beam distance. Keep in mind that throw distance depends on the emitter and reflector design, as well as the light output. Most comparable flashlights of their size will emit a maximum of 1000 lumens. However, the inclusion of a larger Li-ion battery and upgraded LED makes the Fenix PD36R stand out from its competitors. The additional lumens also help to ensure visibility over a longer distance. On the turbo setting, the PD36R has a beam distance of 928 feet (283 meters).

Fenix PD36R Key Components

These are the main showpiece of the new Fenix PD36R. Fenix has added a Luminus SST40 that produces up to 1600 lumens. The Luminus SST40 is positioned at the center. The bezel is glued and crenelated, so it’s impossible to come off. The glass is a hardened, ultra-clear glass lens with an anti-glare or anti-reflective coating. Besides the glass lens, the light also features a smooth reflector.

Fenix PD36R User Interface and Switch

The firmware is quite simple. Its user interface is also simple. Use the side switch for changing modes while the tail switch is designed for turning on the flashlight and unleashing the sun.

Fenix PD36R Modes

Powerful tactical flashlights like the Fenix PD36R have much more than just an on/off function. The PD36R has an eco, a turbo, and a strobe mode as well. These modes are more noticeable, so users can use them to call for reinforcement or disorient a potential attacker. It is a great setup and considering that the strobe is a handy feature that you may need to use in emergencies, this activation is easy enough to remember and use in a stressful, high-adrenaline situation.

Available Modes:

  • Eco -Low – Med -High -Turbo
  • Strobe

From the ON Position

  • Rear switch: single-click “off”
  • Side switch: single-click “change modes”
  • Side switch: double-click “change two modes”
  • Strobe: press and hold the side switch

From the OFF Position

  • The side switch doesn’t work in the OFF position.
  • Half-click the rear button to turn it on momentarily.
  • Full press the rear switch to go back to the last mode.

Fenix PD36R Lock-Out Mode

Fenix recommends unscrewing the flashlight’s body to break the electrical pathway, which will help prevent any potential accidental activations.

Fenix PD36R Charging and Battery

Another thing that makes the Fenix PD36R unique is the use of a rechargeable 21700 Lithium-ion battery- 5000 mAh. For an extended period, the standard has been 18650 li-ion batteries. However, Fenix has delivered with the use of a 21700 rechargeable battery. This Li-ion battery allows the new PD36R to deliver extended runtimes and achieve high lumen outputs that were not attainable with the 18650 li-ion battery. This battery is made even better because it is just a few millimeters larger than the 18650 battery. Many 21700 li-ion battery-type flashlights come in the same size range as 18650 searchlights but with increased lumen capacities and longer run times. Read the user manual to ensure safe charging. Use the provided cable only. Avoid charging 21700/18650 li-ion batteries in cheap, possibly unsafe, external chargers. The battery also features a protection board, which makes it longer than most chargers on the market. That means you’ll have to charge the battery inside the flashlight or purchase a quality external charging that supports protected 21700 batteries. The PD36R is also compatible with 18650 batteries, but you need to use a battery adapter. The manufacturer doesn’t include one in the light package, but you can get it separately. Since this light comes with a 21700 battery, it is easy to see why Fenix didn’t provide an adapter.

Once you switch on the light, the side switch will show the battery percentage by using two different colors: Green and Red.

  • Solid green: 85 to 100%
  • Flashing Green: 50 to 85%
  • Solid red: 25 to 50%
  • Flashing red: 1 to 25%

Fenix states that the light can charge at up to 3 amps. Just make sure to use a high-power USB charger. Once the battery is fully charged, the LED indicator will turn green. Fully charging the Fenix PD36R should take around 4 hours to complete.

Fenix PD36R Longer Runtimes

The last thing you want is a drained battery when in an emergency. A searchlight’s power source determines its runtime. With an improved 21700 rechargeable battery and a brand-new Luminus SST40 LED, the Fenix PD36R offers extended runtimes that exceed other flashlights in the series, such as the PD35 and the PD35 TAC. It is interesting to note that such a compact flashlight can provide such great runtimes. The 30 lumens offered by the Eco mode can last up to 115 hours. Even more interesting is the 2.9 hours users get with the max output of 1600 lumens. Such extended runtimes are ideal for anyone looking for a tactical flashlight for work, including police officers, security guards, and home inspectors.

The Fenix PD36R is currently priced at just $99.95. Although it is not the cheapest light on the market, it is well worth it, and the PD36R won’t disappoint you. Of all the tactical flashlights currently on the market, the Fenix PD36R offers the best combination of modern features at a reasonable price point. It has a user-friendly interface that allows you to cycle through five different brightness levels. It also includes a strobe setting, but it doesn’t get in the way of everyday use. This light projects a long-distance hot spot, which gives you a clear view of the surroundings. It is high quality in finish and fit, and it can withstand submersion in the water thanks to its high rating of IPX8. Enough for prolonged use in rainy and wet conditions. You’ll also be pleased to know that the body is made to prevent it from rolling when placed on a flat surface. Compared to other flashlights of its size, the Fenix PD36R is well worth the money. The quality of the Fenix PD36R meets or exceeds that of its competitors and even competes with larger tactical flashlights. The battery life is impressive, and the torch is strong enough to withstand a wide range of conditions. Its lightweight and compact size make it perfect for carrying in any situation. This flashlight is a brilliant choice.
